I have an EL509WS and an EL509WM. The most common problem encountered by users of the EL509 series is that the display starts to fade away after some time and the changing of batteries does not help with this problem. Many have tried to temporarily solve this problem by hitting the back of the calculator, where the batteries are. This works, but only for a while.
This problem arises from the lack of contact between the batteries and the metal contact connecting to the main circuit. This may be caused by the metal contact bending down after prolonged usage or by the rust or other dirt left behind by the batteries on the metal contacts.
To solve this problem, open the back cover for the batteries (It's at the top). Take out the batteries. Make sure the metal contacts look clean. You can try to rub off any dirt using rubbing alcohol. Use pliers to bend the metal contacts slightly upwards, towards where the batteries will be placed. Put the batteries back and try to turn on the calculator. If the display still fades off, try adjusting the metal contacts slightly. Do not use too much strength and damage the calculator. If the calculator works properly, close back the cover and you're done.
